Just Like Chef Used to Make

Sometimes my local vending machine has selections that, while potentially tasty, have made interesting marketing choices. Like Crazy 8s from Cloverhill Bakery. Because of how these chocolate donut holes are manufactured, two of them are stuck together looking like a number 8. Or like a part of the male anatomy. They look like the sort of treat that should be sold in the Non-Metal, Non-Mcfarlane section of Spencer's Gifts.

Oh and for those wishing to be multi-cultural, they also come in glazed.

So Easy a Bachelor Could Do It

One of my single male coworkers brought in some incredible chocolate-butterscotch fudge this morning. He says he made it based on this Paula Dean recipe from FoodNetwork.com.

X-13D

I tried a bag of Doritos X-13D mystery flavor chips a while back. I thought they were more of an interesting marketing experiment than anything else (the package avoids telling you any flavor and implies some sort of flavor guessing contest). I thought it would be really cool if the food scientists at Doritos made up batches in different flavors and packaged them identically. Alas our two bags tasted the same. Tycho describes them thusly in today's Dorito related rant:
Somehow we ended up with a bag of X-13D superchips, some kind of mystery flavor, and if you want to know what the taste like imagine that a hamburger patty has fallen onto a cat, condiment side down. Believe me, it's worth buying a bag to verify this assertion.
Everyone in my regular lunch group took a taste. The consensus was that they tasted like McDonald's Cheeseburgers complete with processed cheese, onion, mustard, pickle, ketchup, and unidentifiable meat. Mmm... unidentifiable McDs meat... Whether felines are involved would probably depend on your opinion of McDonald's palatability.

Kiss the Cook

In another food related post, Amybear and I have realized that banana bread is a wonderful food. Why? Because we buy fruit, but rarely end up eating it all before they start to go bad. With bananas, the best time to make banana bread is when the skins have turned so black you wouldn't dare put the bananas in your mouth. But you can process them into a form which is quite tasty.

Both Amy and I like to cook. I like to bake and I'm getting pretty good at making cookies and brownies, as the DCBA members that went to the New Years Party can attest. Our initial attempts at banana bread in our breadmaker resulted in something that was more of a sandwich bread than a desert bread. It was good but not great. Amybear did some research and we whipped up some honest to God desert bread last weekend. Good stuff.

But now when I buy bananas I'm almost rooting for them to wind up disgusting so we can cook with them. Somehow that doesn't seem like a good thing.

Cheesy Tots

If you haven't tried the new "cheesy tots" at Burger King, I highly recommend them. They're a mixture of potato flakes and cheese that are battered and fried. I know, your arteries are hardening just thinking about it. But that means they must taste good right? Get the 12 piece, the pricing structure makes it the best deal by far.

So in summary, Chicken Fries are crap, Stackers are pretty good, Cheesy Tots are excellent.
